Repipes - Partial & Full

Plenty of problems within a home can lead to the need for new water lines. Problems that arise such as slab leaks, pinhole leaks, and low water pressure are all signs that water re-piping will need to be done. When that time comes around, you’re going to need the pros at Alternative Plumbing Plus.

Whole House Repipes - Full or Partial

New water lines can help improve the quality of water as well as the water pressure inside the home. You’ll be amazed at the difference, as showering will take on a whole new level of pleasure!
Galvanized water lines have a tendency to corrode over time. This often leads to a buildup of rust and debris within the water lines making them basically useless. Water lines are a critical part of any home and without working ones, they aren’t of any value.

If you suffer from leaky water lines or even low water pressure, it may be time to have those older pipes looked at. Our experts have years of experience in dealing with this problem.

Call us for an estimate to replace some or all of your water distribution system. Today most repipes are done using PEX, plastic water lines, that will not rust or corrode the way the old fashioned, once used galvanized water lines do. We come to your home and give you an estimate.

New water lines will:
  • Rid your home of rusted and corroded pipes
  • Improve your water pressure
  • Improve the cleanliness of your water
  • Increase the value of your home

Kitchen

Your Kitchen Is Your Command Center

In generations past, time spent working together in the kitchen traditionally was the opportunity for mothers and daughters to talk about all things great and small. There was time to discuss everything from questions about life when the mother was growing up to the best way to finish the latest homework project. Times have changed and now the whole family can spend this quality time in the kitchen. If you feel like you never have enough time to connect with your children, this is a great way to make a little more time together.

Many parents have also noticed that the best time to get kids to talk about something that is on their minds is when there is some other activity going on. Working together in the kitchen is an ideal setting for fostering such important moments together.

Water Heater Mandate — Toledo, OH — Alternative Plumbing Plus, Inc.
URGENT NOTICE!
New official regulations from The Department of Energy will drive up the cost of water heaters by at least 30%.

New Government Energy Efficiency Standards will force manufacturers of gas and electric water heaters to increase their efficiency by April 15th, 2015.

These changes will increase consumer prices significantly based on research/development costs, high-priced materials and installation due to the increased diameter of the units.
If your water heater is over ten years old, it's time to change it! Please do not wait; the newly manufactured units will cost much more after April 15th.

You can also choose to upgrade to a tankless water heater. You'll save money because it only heats the water when you open your faucet rather than constantly heating and storing heated water.

Call to be added to the list of people that will beat the April 15th deadline!
Tankless Water Heaters
Whether you stepped into your shower and were rudely awakened by ice-cold water, or you are tired of your utility bills climbing and are interested in a more efficient water heater, a tankless water heater may be exactly what you are looking for. Tankless water heaters only heat water when the faucet for hot water is turned on. They use on average about 30 to 50% less energy than tank water heaters. This saves you money on your utility bills that can add up fast.

With a tankless water heater, there’s no more fighting with the family over who used all of the hot water and no more waiting to run your dishwasher or washing machine until after everyone has showered!
Tankless Water Heaters — Toledo, OH — Alternative Plumbing Plus, Inc.
With endless hot water, family and home life become less stressful, especially when you save money over the long-term. If you opt to have a traditional tank water heater, there are some advantages here too. Tank water heaters have been the standard for decades and are less expensive than tankless models.

Backflow Preventers and Testing

Backflow Prevention Devices or RPZ's

A Reduced Pressure Zone device...... also known as an RPZ or RPZ valve, is a type of backflow prevention device used to protect water supplies from contamination. RPZ's may also be known as reduced pressure principle backflow prevention devices or reduced pressure zone assemblies.

Alternative Plumbing is certified by the State of Ohio to install Backflow Preventers, perform the annual testing, and provide annual certifications that are required by the State of Ohio.
WHAT IS A BACKFLOW PREVENTER?
A backflow prevention device is used to protect potable water supplies from contamination or pollution due to backflow.

In water supply systems, water is usually maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow from the tap, shower, etc. When pressure fails or is reduced, as may happen if a water main bursts, pipes freeze or there is an unexpectedly high demand on the water system, then such reduced pressure in the pipe may allow contaminated water from the ground, from storage or from other sources to be drawn up into the system.
WHO NEEDS A BACKFLOW PREVENTER?
Just about every property that isn’t residential housing needs backflow testing, for example:
  • Botanic gardens
  • Car and plant-washing facilities
  • Caravan parks
  • Clubhouses for sports
  • Daycare centers and kindergartens
  • Dry-cleaners and laundries
  • Hospitals and funeral parlors
  • Hotels
  • Medical and dental surgeries
  • Motels and unit complexes
  • Pest control and water-carrying vehicles
  • Restaurants
  • Schools
  • Shops
  • Vehicle-repair workshops

INSTALLATION, TESTING & RECERTIFICATION
Alternative Plumbing is backflow prevention accredited and is fully licensed plumbers. Simply call us, and we will book you in. Once we have done the backflow installation and testing, we will send the completed inspection report to the local authorities and give you a copy for your records.

The State of Ohio requires Backflow Prevention Devices to be tested and recertified annually. The backflow testing we provide ensures the device is operating correctly. If your device fails the testing, several problems may occur:
  • The device may not prevent contamination from entering the drinkable water supply.
  • There may be leaking and wastewater causing an excess water bill.
  • You may notice reduced water pressure supplying your property.

Frozen Lines

We Can Thaw Them and Repair Them

A frozen pipe generally occurs to plumbing that is not in a heated space when winter temperatures fall below freezing. When exposed to below freezing temps, the water turns into ice, and the pipe expands until it breaks a small slit into the copper or will shatter plastic. It does not matter what material your pipes are made of, be it copper, steel, or plastic, pipes are not designed to withstand the pressure of freezing water.

Pipes that freeze first are usually located near outside walls that are exposed to the colder temperatures than pipes located throughout the middle of the structure. Some examples include outdoor hose faucets, pool lines, outdoor and indoor sprinkler systems, and other supply lines located in attics, basements, crawl spaces, garages, etc. Pipes in attics, crawl spaces & unheated rooms are particularly susceptible to freezing.

Usually, a frozen pipe is not often obvious because it is behind walls or in a crawl space leading into the home, such as from an outside faucet. The flooding usually is caught much later after the damage has been done. An uncontrolled water leak from a broken pipe creates extensive flooding and water damage of carpeting, drywall, baseboards, and furniture.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY WATER LINES FREEZE?

The sooner the problem is recognized, the better the chance that damage will be minimized. If frozen pipes do occur, we can thaw them. We thaw the pipes safely using electric thawing machines (for metal pipes only) so that there is no damage to walls or ceilings from an open flame.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY WATER LINES FREEZE & BREAK?

If a water pipe bursts, turn off the water at the main shut-off valve (usually at the water meter or where the mainline enters the house); leave the faucet(s) open until repairs are completed; Call Alternative Plumbing, and we will send a qualified technician to fix the pipe.

WHERE ARE MY SHUTOFF VALVES?

There are two major shutoff valves - the first is generally located outside near the property line normally housed by a cylinder with a cap on it called the curb box. The other major valve is located in your home next to the water meter. Other valves may be near plumbing fixtures such as sinks and toilets. We can check those valves at your meter and replace it if necessary so they work when you need them to!

Many Ohio and Michigan residents go on vacation during the coldest months of the year. If there is an extended power failure or a furnace breakdown, a frozen pipe can appear very quickly. Without anyone at home, the water damage and clean up after the disaster can be quite extensive. If you are leaving your home during winter for an extended period and want to turn down your heat, ask us about winterizing your home. Winterizing your home will provide you the peace of mind of no unpleasant disasters upon your return. Please go to our Winterization page for more information.

It is ALWAYS best to get those lines thawed as soon as possible. Call us immediately before they split and cause thousands in damage!

Winterization

Keep Your Vacant Properties Safe
Why risk water lines freezing and bursting in vacant, unheated homes and buildings during Winter that all too often result in thousands of dollars of extensive water damage to walls, ceilings, floors, and contents while creating opportunities for dangerous mold growth.

Keeping the heat on but turned down is often not enough to prevent freeze-ups either. If a home will be vacant over the winter, or maybe you're a snowbird going South for a few months, winterizing the home ensures the water lines will not freeze and burst. We offer standard and maximum winterization services that will protect a home or building. Call us today for details!
DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU...
Generally, when a pipe that feeds a certain fixture such as a shower, sink or toilet freezes, you will no longer be able to get water through that fixture. This would be the case if the pipe is frozen solid. When water freezes within a pipe, the volume of the water expands, causing the pipes to break at a weak point. This may not be noticed immediately. The pipes may thaw from the inside out with the pipe actually breaking only when the full water pressure is restored.

In times of tragedy such as frozen burst pipes and water damage, it is imperative to take action immediately. Whether you have a broken pipe in your kitchen sink or a large commercial property, quick action steps will help to reduce water damage and save your valuables. Our experienced team is always ready to make those critical repairs.
